The core difference lies in crushing principle and application stage. The PF impact crusher features a horizontal shaft design where material passes through the crushing chamber horizontally — it handles larger feed sizes (up to 350 mm) and is primarily used for secondary crushing and coarse shaping. The VSI sand maker features a vertical shaft design where material enters the rotor from the top center and is high-speed projected — it handles fine-crushed feed (up to 50 mm) and is dedicated to tertiary fine crushing, sand making, and deep shaping. VSI output sand has superior particle shape, better gradation, and in rock-on-rock mode, extremely low metal wear — making it the irreplaceable final-stage core equipment in manufactured sand production lines.

Rock-on-rock mode is ideal for high-abrasiveness materials (river pebbles, granite, basalt, etc.) in high-volume continuous sand production. In this mode, material autogenously crushes against the natural material lining, resulting in extremely low metal wear part consumption, though sand yield is slightly lower. Rock-on-iron mode is suited for medium-low abrasiveness materials (limestone, dolomite, etc.) or applications demanding higher sand yield — material directly impacts alloy wear tips for higher crushing efficiency and greater sand production, though metal wear is relatively higher. Both modes can be flexibly switched on-site based on material characteristics and production targets.

The finished sand fineness modulus is controlled through three methods: first, adjusting rotor speed — higher speed produces finer sand with greater crushing intensity; second, varying the feed method — changing the ratio between center feed and waterfall feed affects crushing intensity and product size distribution; third, closed-loop regulation with the downstream screening system via screen aperture size and sand return ratio. With VFD drive configuration, stepless rotor speed adjustment is the most direct and convenient fineness control method.

In rock-on-rock mode processing highly abrasive materials like granite and river pebbles, the alloy wear tips (emission platforms, distributor plates) inside the rotor typically last 800-1,500 hours, and circumferential liners last 1,500-3,000 hours. In rock-on-iron mode processing limestone, wear tip life is approximately 500-800 hours. All wear parts are secured by bolts or wedge blocks, and combined with the hydraulic lid opening system, a complete rotor wear part replacement takes only 2-3 hours — fast and efficient on-site.

The primary advantages of dual-motor drive are balanced power distribution, symmetric rotor torque, and reduced operating vibration. Two motors independently drive the rotor via pulleys on both sides, ensuring uniform rotor loading and extending bearing and main shaft service life. Under reduced capacity requirements, single-motor operation is possible (reduced-speed mode), but output will decrease by approximately 40-50%, and the unbalanced load from single-side drive must be monitored. Full dual-motor operation at rated power is recommended for normal production conditions.

The maximum allowable feed size for the VSI-1145 is 50 mm (center feed), and waterfall feed should be controlled within 40 mm. If feed exceeds these limits, oversized material cannot smoothly enter the rotor deep cavity — it tends to bridge and block the feed opening, and if forced into the rotor, may disrupt rotor dynamic balance, cause abnormal vibration, or even jam the rotor. Therefore, reliable fine crushing equipment (such as an impact crusher or cone crusher) should be configured upstream of the VSI sand maker to ensure strictly controlled feed size.

VSI sand maker performance is affected when processing material with high mud or moisture content. High-moisture material tends to adhere to chamber walls and discharge openings during high-speed rotor projection, gradually narrowing discharge channels and potentially causing blockages. High-mud material reduces impact intensity between particles in the crushing chamber, lowering sand-making efficiency. It is recommended to install washing or de-sliming equipment upstream of the VSI sand maker, keeping feed mud content below 5% and moisture content below 3% to ensure optimal sand-making performance.
